The Greatest Super Bowl MVP Performances of All Time

February 3, 2026

The Super Bowl is the ultimate stage in professional sports. Over 100 million people tune in to watch two teams battle for the Lombardi Trophy, and the pressure is unimaginable. While football is the ultimate team game, the Super Bowl MVP award is reserved for the single player who rises above the pressure to deliver a legendary performance.

If you enjoy Weddle Unlimited, you know that keeping track of Hall of Fame players and iconic performances is a great way to sharpen your NFL knowledge. Today, we're looking back at five of the most extraordinary Super Bowl MVP performances in NFL history.

5. Von Miller (Super Bowl 50)

It is incredibly rare for a defensive player to win the Super Bowl MVP, as the award almost always goes to the winning quarterback. But in Super Bowl 50, Von Miller left the voters no choice.

Facing the heavily favored Carolina Panthers and MVP quarterback Cam Newton, the Denver Broncos defense put on a historic display. Miller was the tip of the spear, recording 2.5 sacks and forcing two fumbles—both of which led directly to Broncos touchdowns. His relentless speed off the edge completely dismantled the highest-scoring offense in the league and single-handedly secured Peyton Manning's final ring.

4. Doug Williams (Super Bowl XXII)

Doug Williams made history long before the final whistle blew, as he was the first Black quarterback to start in a Super Bowl. But he didn't just start; he put on one of the greatest passing clinics in NFL history.

Despite hyper-extending his knee in the first quarter, Williams returned to orchestrate a legendary second-quarter offensive explosion. In that quarter alone, he threw four touchdown passes. He finished the game with 340 passing yards as the Washington Redskins blew out the Denver Broncos 42-10.

3. Marcus Allen (Super Bowl XVIII)

Running backs used to dominate the NFL, and Marcus Allen's performance in Super Bowl XVIII for the Los Angeles Raiders is a perfect example of why. Allen tore apart the Washington Redskins' defense to the tune of 191 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 20 carries.

His most iconic moment came in the third quarter when he took a handoff, reversed direction entirely to avoid a tackle in the backfield, and exploded down the middle of the field for a 74-yard touchdown run. It remains one of the greatest single plays in Super Bowl history.

2. Jerry Rice (Super Bowl XXIII)

You can't have a list of NFL greats without mentioning Jerry Rice. While Joe Montana gets a lot of the credit for the San Francisco 49ers' late-game heroics in Super Bowl XXIII against the Cincinnati Bengals, it was Jerry Rice who kept them in the game.

Rice caught 11 passes for a mind-boggling, Super Bowl-record 215 receiving yards. He also scored a crucial fourth-quarter touchdown. Whenever the 49ers desperately needed a first down to keep a drive alive, Montana looked for number 80, and Rice delivered every single time.

1. Steve Young (Super Bowl XXIX)

For years, Steve Young lived in the massive, inescapable shadow of Joe Montana. In Super Bowl XXIX, he finally stepped into his own light and delivered what many consider the greatest quarterback performance ever seen on the Super Bowl stage.

Young absolutely dismantled the San Diego Chargers. He threw an incredible *six* touchdown passes—a Super Bowl record that still stands today. He also led all rushers in the game, proving his dual-threat capability on the biggest stage. As the clock wound down, the iconic image of Young asking someone to "take the monkey off my back" cemented his status as an all-time legend independent of Montana.
